While ROH was building hype for this PPV, they announced that two names who were recently cut from WWE NXT were set to make an appearance. However, they couldn’t wait to let it be a surprise – and thus we have Jake Atlas & Taylor Rust facing off on this show. It’s the ROH debut for Atlas, while Rust was here for the Pure Rules tournament in late 2020 – where he showed an affinity for the style. Who will get the win tonight?
Taylor Rust Is A Scientific Wrestler – And He Picked Jake Atlas Apart
Taylor would start by shoving Atlas into the corner, only for Atlas to show that he won’t be pushed around. Atlas would show his wrestling skills, but Taylor with his experience in NJPW would out-do him quickly. Taylor would let go of Atlas and look for a roll up, only to be countered. Atlas would dodge a kick and go for one of his own before ending up in a tight ankle lock.
Taylor would lose his grip, with Atlas rolling to the outside to regain his composure – only to re-enter the ring and be taken down. Atlas would have his elbow hyperextended, before Taylor stomped right down on it. Taylor would go for some knife edge chops, with Atlas fighting back. Atlas would fall again, and have his shoulder stomped. Taylor got a spinning shoulder breaker, before going after the arm.
He’d lose grasp again, and take a boot to the side of the face. Atlas would grab a rear chinlock, grinding Taylor down before a rushing elbow strike into the corner – which he missed. Taylor would rain down elbow strikes on the mat, before hitting Eat Defeat for a two and a half count. Taylor would look for The Perfect Circle, before moving into the Goya Lock for the win.
Taylor Rust was always a perfect fit for Ring of Honor, and he showed this in this match. Jake Atlas didn’t give his best performance, but has more chances to impress in ROH. Match Rating: 2.25/5 (** 1/4)
