In January, AEW Dynamite will move from TNT to TBS, which means it makes sense for AEW to bring in a new championship to commemorate this! We have the TNT Championship for the men, so the TBS Championship will focus on the women’s division, and tonight we find out who will be getting a shot at history!
A Stacked Field
We don’t have to wait long to see this one start, as it kicks off tomorrow with Ruby Soho & Penelope Ford tomorrow on AEW Dynamite! Other first round matches include Serena Deeb taking on Hikaru Shida in a rematch from their last match on the 2nd anniversary of Dynamite – where Deeb stole a win. The Bunny takes on Red Velvet, and Anna Jay can take out some anger on her loss to Britt Baker when it comes to her match with Jaime Hayter.
However, this has a field of 12. Due to being highly ranked in the AEW Women’s division, four women got first round byes. Thunder Rosa will take the winner of Jay vs. Hayter. Jade Cargill gets the winner of Bunny vs. Velvet. Nyla Rose will watch Deeb vs. Shida very closely, and Kris Statlander will do the same with Ford vs. Soho. This is smart, making sure your top stars get rewarded – but a bye doesn’t mean you instantly win your next match.
Some Names Are Missing, Notably Riho
They pulled out the best they have on the roster for this, seeing as Riho is out of action after a bad reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine – otherwise she’d likely be in over The Bunny. Ryo Mizunami and Emi Sakura are also options that got looked over unfortunately. Overall, a strong bracket and will hopefully get better in-ring time then the WWE Queen’s Crown tournament.
