Counting On and 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar has been found guilty of child porn charges by an Arkansas jury earlier today. As it stands, he faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 on each count.
The Road Ahead for Josh Duggar
Duggar’s legal team faced a difficult challenge against the state which had federal internet investigators who found pictures and videos of underage girls being abused on his computer.
The defense’s argument that the content was downloaded or uploaded by another party didn’t land as was expected. There seemed to be a small window of opportunity for Josh Duggar when it was explained that the content could’ve been put on the computer remotely.
However, as explained by the prosecution, there were detailed logs showing that the files were downloaded and saved while someone was actively sending and responding to private messages.
If anything, it would be hard for Duggar not to notice that the files were on his computer at some time in 2019. Adding to this is that the computer actually had two operating systems: a business one and a hidden one.
While there isn’t anything nefarious about having two operating systems on a computer, a hidden one that pops up in investigations will raise suspension—and finding illegal content bolsters the prosecution’s case.
The road ahead for Josh Duggar will be punctuated by the terms of his sentencing. He isn’t guaranteed the full 20 years but prison time and the $500,000 fine are certain.
If the defense can find that outside factors such as the jury considering Duggar’s previous history of molesting his sisters in the early 2000s weighed into their decision, they could probably “run it back”.
How this will impact the state Senate chances of his father Jim Bob Duggar remain to be seen.
