Colton Underwood admitted that he went through substance abuse, as a way to combat what we now know was his identification as a gay man.
‘The Bachelor’: Colton Underwood Admits Struggling With Substance Abuse Because Of ‘Suppressing’ His Sexuality
The former star of ‘The Bachelor’ has come a long way since the show. His decision to come out was on the back of a disastrous relationship with his ex Cassie Randolph, who had decided to file a restraining order against him because she didn’t feel safe.
Although she would later go on to drop this, Colton wanted to make sure that his story got across, which is why his coming out journey is on Netflix. And as part of that process of opening up, Colton admitted that he was abusing drugs.
According to the New York Post, Colton had stated the following: “I was suppressing my sexuality so hard that I was taking medication daily to deal with depression and anxiety, and that made me a paranoid freak.”
It is not clear when this problem had actually started, nor are there any suggestions that Colton was doing this during his time on ‘The Bachelor.’ But given that he felt so withdrawn, the star decided to bottle up all these emotions and keep them to himself.
This did not do him any favours, as it was clear that his mental health was taking a toll. He added: “I didn’t trust a whole lot of people, and I was trying to do anything and everything I could to protect a secret.”
Things had gotten so out of hand that Colton had apparently contemplated the thought of suicide. While he did not go through with anything, on any given day had he not had the support of people around him, who knows what could have happened.
His following comments confirmed as much: “[I] hit rock bottom [and one night and] took a lot of Xanax [hoping I did not] wake up the next morning.”
Colton’s story has shown the value of talking about things with your loved ones. And by having a good support network in place around you, it prevents something like this from ever happen again.
