Tonight was supposed to see the rematch between Cody Rhodes & Sammy Guevara for the TNT Championship. Rhodes defeated Guevara to kick off his third reign with the championship back in December, but tonight is unable to make his scheduled defense. Right now, alongside his wife Brandi Rhodes – he is in quarantine, after being exposed to COVID-19.
Instead of seeing the TNT Championship defended, we will instead see an Interim TNT Champion crowned. Sammy Guevara still gets his chance to get back in the driver seat of this championship, but he will need to defeat the well tested veteran of Dustin Rhodes to get there. Dustin challenged Mr. Brodie Lee for the TNT Championship back during his reign, and was unsuccessful – so tonight looks to finally claim his first bit of gold in AEW.
Sammy Guevara Gets Slowed Down Early
These two have met twice in singles matches in AEW – and the series is split 1-1. Dustin would offer a handshake and it was accepted, a show of respect between two great wrestlers. Guevara would be sent off the ropes by Dustin for an armdrag, before coming back with a hip toss.
Rhodes would be outsped by Guevara and sent to the outside with a dropkick. Guevara would send Rhodes into the barricade and make a gun gesture to Arn Anderson at ringside, and get a middle finger salute back. Rhodes would slam Guevara knee first into the steel steps, before a piledriver on the floor.
Guevara would get back into the ring at the count of nine, before Rhodes sent him back out for a kick to the back of the leg. A foot DDT took the speed of Guevara further away from this match – before a snap powerslam for a two count. Rhodes would hit some downward punches in the corner, before looking for a monkey flip. Guevara shoved him off and nailed the big lariat.
Dustin Rhodes Risks It All
Flopping to the outside, Rhodes would have a chance to rest, but Guevara was there for a double jump springboard to the outside. Back into the ring, Rhodes would be able to nail a Cross Rhodes on Guevara, spiking him on his head before a two count. A code red would follow, before Rhodes would try to go to the top rope.
Guevara picked him off the top, and nailed a picture perfect GTH – but the knee being hurt prevented a pinfall. Fuego Del Sol would set up a table at ringside after crawling out from under the ring. Arn Anderson ran Fuego off, and Rhodes hit a Canadian Destroyer off the apron through the table.
Back in the ring, Rhodes would nail two Cross Rhodes, but was slow on the Tiger Driver and Guevara would be able to power out. Guevara would look for a roll up, but they’d trade control before Guevara was able to pin the shoulders down for the three count! After the match, Daniel Garcia would hit the ring and go right after Guevara, setting up a potential title match while Rhodes is out.
Will Guevara even make it to the coming unification match? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
