Adam Cole has been enjoying being the newest big name in AEW for a while now. However, when Jake Atlas got signed, suddenly Cole was threatened. After Atlas won his debut match for AEW on Dark with the Stonewall DDT, Cole has called him out for a match tonight on AEW Rampage. On his way to the ring, Cole would be named as the #1 ranked man in AEW, next in line for Hangman Page… provided Atlas doesn’t get upset.
Jake Atlas Came To Fight
Cole would quickly get wrist control to start the match, but Atlas showed he’s no slouch. Atlas would get the side headlock takedown. Cole would counter into a headscissor, but Atlas was able to easily slip free. Atlas would throw Cole off the ropes but missed the dropkick. They’d both look for superkicks, but it was a stalemate.
Atlas told Cole to talk to the hand, before instead having him talk to the soles of his boots with a dropkick. Cole was backed up into the corner, and ate some chops before he was able to send Atlas out to the floor. He nailed the apron on the way down, before Cole threw Atlas right into the ring post.
Back into the ring, Cole would nail some tight forearm smashes, before taking a rolling elbow. Atlas looked for a springboard cutter, but soared right into a backstabber. Cole slowed things down with a headlock, but Atlas was able to fight up to his feet only to be dropped with a hanging neckbreaker for a two count.
Adam Cole Takes Advantage Of An Injury
Atlas picked up some speed for a step up hurricarana to send Cole outside, before a dropkick through the ropes and a suicide dive. Back in the ring, a shotgun dropkick caught Cole before a pump kick into an Ushigoroshi dropped Atlas. Cole tuned up the band, but took a lariat instead. Knee drop brainbuster from Cole would be the receipt, but only got a two count.
A single leg dropkick would catch Cole as he went for the Shining Wizard, before an Orange Crush for a two count. Atlas went for a springboard, but took a superkick and injured his knee on the landing. Unable to hit Panama Sunrise, Cole grabbed an ankle lock and got the win.
Following the match, Cole & reDRagon were ready to beat down the already injured Atlas. Orange Cassidy with a steel chain wrapped hand would come to the ring with Chuck Taylor & Wheeler Yuta would clear the ring and make the save however.
Last Minute Change For Battle Of The Belts
Once things calmed down, we got a card change for Battle of The Belts. Cody Rhodes is not cleared, so Dustin Rhodes will instead face Sammy Guevara to name an interim TNT Champion. This is a last minute change, prompted by Rhodes likely being exposed to COVID-19.
Who will claim the Interim TNT Championship? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
