Last night was truly the end of an era for WWE NXT as far as the on-screen product goes. Tommaso Ciampa lost the NXT Championship to Bron Breakker in what many viewed as a passing of the torch. However, today is the true end of an era – as WWE has made deep cuts to the crew that made NXT what it was. Names like William Regal, Ace Steel, and Road Dogg are no longer in WWE.
WWE Releases Some Major Foundational Names From NXT
The full list of released names from WWE NXT today is as follows.
Road Dogg, Ace Steel, Ryan Katz, William Regal, Dave Kapoor, Scott Armstrong, George Carroll, Hideki Suzuki of Diamond Mine, Timothy Thatcher, Danny Burch Cathy Corino, and Sarah Cummins
The biggest name here is William Regal, who spent nearly a decade as the NXT GM. In addition, Regal was one of their biggest talent scouts, bringing names like Johnny Gargano, Adam Cole, and more to the promotion. Timothy Thatcher & Danny Burch are both former NXT Tag Team Champions, making them big losses – and Road Dogg is a WWE legend, and close friend of Triple H.
Commenting on the release of Regal, Johnny Gargano would have the following to say about Regal.
“If it wasn’t for William Regal a lot of your favorite guys wouldn’t be on television. He got so many of us “indie guys” an opportunity. He will never take credit for that, but he deserves his flowers for helping and molding this generation of wrestlers.”
An Intentional Move As WWE Moves To NXT 2.0
If it seems like WWE is trying to rid themselves of the old guard of NXT, that’s because they are. WWE would issue the following statement after the releases.
“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center. We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”
