If everything went fairly in AEW, Thunder Rosa would have had no issues taking out Jade Cargill and making the finals of the TBS Championship tournament. However, a debutting Mercedes Martinez would help Cargill in defeating Rosa. Tonight, Rosa gets her chance at revenge – as she meets Martinez one on one.
Thunder Rosa & Mercedes Martinez Brawl It Out In A Grudge Match
These are perhaps the two toughest women in AEW – and it quickly became a fight. Rosa dashed in with a shotgun dropkick before dropping some fast elbow drops to the back. Martinez slumped on the middle rope, and took a senton to the neck. On the outside, Rosa nailed a suplex, before getting back into the ring.
Martinez got her first offence of the match with a big spinebuster, getting a two count. Dragon Sleeper was applied, but Rosa slipped free before being hung upside down with a delayed vertical suplex. Martinez would use the ropes for a swinging neckbreaker, getting a two count before eating a stunner.
A northern lights suplex would get a two count, before a quick break broke up the action. Once things returned, Martinez was setting up a second rope Death Valley Driver – getting a two count. Rosa fired back with an Emerald Flowsion, but Martinez rolled out of the ring. She’d pull a pipe out from under the ring, and whacked Rosa in the side of the head – ending this one in a rare DQ for AEW.
After the match, it’d be revealed that Britt Baker hired Martinez to take out Rosa. While she wasn’t happy with the DQ finish, Martinez got the job done. Baker would say to finish things next time, but might not be keen on pushing further when Martinez still has that steel pipe.
Ricky Starks Puts The FTW Championship On The Line
Ricky Starks is finally deciding to make the FTW Championship mean something with some defences. After Jay Lethal stepped up for the Team Taz turncoat that is Dante Martin, Starks knew what had to be done. Tonight, with the FTW Championship on the line – Starks will show Lethal who runs this show. Lethal enters this one with a 5 match winning streak, while Starks is 10-1 in his last 11 matches.
After some duelling chants from the crowd, showing an even split – these two would lock up. Lethal grabbed a headlock and was shoved off, only to nail the shoulder tackle. He’d find another headlock, and the same outcome came about. Starks would take Lethal down and hit some punches, before being nailed with some Ric Flair approved knife edge chops before looking for a suplex.
Lethal took an elbow to the back of the neck instead, before tripping Starks out of the ring before hitting the tope suicida. Another one landed before Powerhouse Hobbs would intimidate Lethal to buy Starks some time. Lethal tried to drive Starks into the ring post, but Starks slipped through and came back around with a lariat.
A fan handed his phone to Starks, and Starks took some time to film a quick video before taking another chop from Lethal. Back into the ring, Starks dodged a rushing forearm from Lethal and stomped him into the corner. Starks was able to get a belly to belly suplex, but only got a two count.
Lethal Injection Doesn’t Work Against Ricky Starks
Starks would apply a front chancery hold, and Lethal would have a hard time even finding his feet. Once he was up, he’d set up a slick lariat and got a chance to recover. He’d roll up Starks for a one count, before getting the cradle pin for a two count. Lethal hit the Lethal Combination getting another near fall.
Starks would block an Alabama Slam attempt, and got a sit-out powerbomb for a two count. Lethal would want Lethal Injection following an enzuguri, but Powerhouse Hobbs played the distraction. Hobbs avoided a dive from Lethal, before Dante Martin appeared to help take Hobbs down.
Back in the ring, Lethal hit a cutter but wanted the Lethal Injection. Starks dodged and want to set up the Roshambo, but was rolled up for a two count. Lethal went for another Lethal Injection, but it was blocked right into Roshambo for the finish.
