It looks like we might see Bill Goldberg back in a wrestling ring as early tonight’s WWE Smackdown if the rumors are true.
There’s a very real chance that Roman Reigns will pop onto WWE television to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at Elimination Chamber.
If this is true, then he’s going to have to return to the WWE tonight or next week at the earliest to set up a storyline between them heading into the event.
They wouldn’t need much time to build for it and could just have Goldberg appear and taunt Reigns about how he destroyed Brock Lesnar a few years ago and Reigns needed help.
But is Goldberg’s return really going to happen?
Next!
As we mentioned above, it’s definitely possible since the Hall of Famer said he has one more match on his current WWE contract.
He’s contradicted himself by saying he’s signed through 2023, but that could be part of a whichever comes first type of thing.
After all, Goldberg was reportedly contracted to work two matches a year, but he wrestled three in 2021. The deal could’ve been reworked or worded in a way that negates 2023 if he wrestles a set number of matches.
Either way, it looks like Goldberg’s contract will probably end after Elimination Chamber, making him Reigns’ next victory unless he signs and there’s a creative shift.
Making up for lost time
Their Elimination Chamber match would be a make up match as the two were supposed to face each other at WrestleMania 36 in 2020, but Reigns withdrew and took time off during the early days of the pandemic.
Goldberg’s steady work has given the WWE a chance to pull out a big name to help boost ratings, but Goldberg is 55 years old and is coming off knee surgery from after his match against Bobby Lashley at Crown jewel in October 2021.
In December, Goldberg announced that he needs shoulder surgery, but he’ll get that taken care of once his wrestling career is over and this could be his last match.
As great as he’s been, it’s hard to get into it when Goldberg comes back for a once and done type of match. The WWE needs to work on developing their young stars instead of taking away their roles.
