Russian hockey star Alex Ovechkin has passionately called for the end of war between Russia and Ukraine.

The two countries have been at war, ever since Russia decided to invade Ukraine under the pretext of what they perceived to be growing NATO influence.
And given that the Ukrainian authorities were not going to sit down and allow a foreign country to enter into their land, it has naturally led to a standoff which has killed numerous people, as well as displacing them.
In an official statement, Alex said: “Please, no more war. It doesn’t matter who is in the war — Russia, Ukraine, different countries — I think we live in a world, like, we have to live in peace and a great world.”
But things have been complicated for Alex for the following reasons. First of all, during the off-season, he often likes to go home to Russia in order to recuperate. However, given what the country is currently going through, this is unlikely to happen.
Secondly, in any event, he is known for being a supporter of Russian President, Vladimir Putin. In the picture here, we can see the two standing side-by-side as they are smiling.
Therefore, in a country where public criticism of leadership is not always viewed in a good light, Alex has to be careful over what he says.
So when Alex was asked whether he backs the Russian President, this is what he had to say: “Well, he is my president. But how I said, I am not in politics.
“I am an athlete and you know, how I said, I hope everything is going to be done soon. It’s (a) hard situation right now for both sides and everything.”
The social media response was brutal towards Alex. People felt that he had not done enough to call out the President, and therefore, he was being very insincere.
One person wrote: “I am saddened and shocked that he didn’t denounce Putin and what he has done and is doing to millions of innocent people.
