One of the things that have driven us crazy with WWE over the last few years is the lack of consistency when it comes to building a rivalry. One of those that slips through the cracks constantly is Bill Goldberg.
In the WWE’s attempt to make a splash instead of giving fans a reliable product, the bring Goldberg in to challenge the champion or whomever and that’s it.
Then we get a match that may or may not be good.
Earning the shot
The WWE is supposed to be more sports and reality based, meaning they’re focusing more earning a title shot through competition rather than a heated feud.
While it’s can prove interesting, it feels like it’s led to more triple threats, fatal four ways, and other gimmick matches than before, but at least they’re earning their shot.
Goldberg doesn’t earn his shot. He literally walks out and tells the current champion he’s next and that’s that. No subterfuge, no arguing back and forth, he just tells them.
At least they made his feud with Bobby Lashley more interesting than just a once and done dream match, but they dropped the ball here once again and it’s caused former WWE talent Mark Henry to speak out when he appeared on Busted Open Radio.
Special thanks to sportskeeda.com for the transcript.
“I love Bill (Goldberg) as a person and as a man and as a father, and he’s built up equity in himself as a talent. That never goes away. But, sometimes it’s better used when you’re trying to enhance, bring light to a situation and let somebody else be the mentor. There’s power in ‘giving’. They’re putting Bill in a spot where he’s ‘taking’. And it’s not like he earned the #1 contendership.
“If we saw him three weeks prior knocking off Kevin Owens, knocking off a Drew McIntyre and then him saying, ‘Okay, Roman, I’ve knocked off the top guys in your company, it’s time me and you square up for that title.’ It’s like, ‘Let’s just throw Bill in there.’ When you push it down people’s throat, they don’t like it. They rebel. It’s not Bill’s fault that the people in Jeddah want to see him. I would do it, but I would prepare everybody for it.”
It’s hard to argue with Mark’s assessment when the WWE lives or dies by shoving things down our throats until we accept it, and this is no different than any other time they’ve told us this is the way it is.
It’s a swerve
What makes this even more entertaining is that this is supposed to be Goldberg’s last match on his current contract, and the WWE is trying to sign him to a new one so we think he’ll win at Elimination Chamber.
It’s a wise move as they’re not going to put the belt on someone that’s not signed to the company, and without that contract there’s no believability that Goldberg will win.
In the end, the WWE will do what they want and we’re expected to accept it. With any luck, it’ll be a good match and the fans will enjoy it and neither of them will suffer an injury.
