You could say it’s “Ending Conservatorship” season as Amanda Bynes also seeks to end her own conservatorship after nine years. Perhaps it was Britney Spears successfully ending her lengthy conservatorship in 2021 that sparked things but now actress Bynes is seeking her freedom.
Amanda Bynes Seeks an End to Her 9-Year Conservatorship
Known for shows such as All That, The Amanda Show, and What I Like About You, Bynes stepped away from film and television as addiction became an issue in the 2010s with several documented incidents. In 2013, her parents filed for conservatorship while she was on a mental health hold for starting a small fire in a stranger’s driveway.
That August, her mother was given temporary conservatorship over Amanda’s affairs. After an episode on social media where she claimed to have been abused by her father, her mother regained conservatorship.
On February 23, Amanda Bynes filed the Ventura County Superior Court to have her conservatorship end after nine years. The day prior saw her file what is called a “capacity declaration”. California requires a capacity declaration in the case of conservatorship challenges as a means of updating mental status records.
Bynes has discussed her mental state and well-being for years and has sought treatment while under the conservatorship. Bynes is represented by David A. Esquibias, who issued a statement to People on February 26 about the proceedings. It is punctuated with “She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”
The conservatorship hearing is slated for March 22. Given that a capacity declaration was filed and she has improved from how she was in the early 2010s, this could be a smooth proceeding for the former child actress.
