Jennifer Aniston has made a very good living in Hollywood is largely the same type of role, and now she’s stepped up as a gatekeeper for Hollywood after she criticized internet stars becoming famous for “doing nothing.”
She sat down to do an interview with Pam & Tommy star Sebastian Stan and the discussion went to the 1995 Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape the Hulu series is based on.
It didn’t take long for them to get to how the tape came out when the internet was fresh and new, and was beginning to shape our culture.
“This thing of people becoming famous for basically doing nothing but yet having these incredible careers. And then women’s reputation… I mean — Paris Hilton, Monica Lewinsky, all those.’

And when Stan talked about how so much was happening in the 90s, and how the OJ Simpson trial was the first 24/7 new media in a way, she responded with:
“I feel so lucky that we got a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today… More streaming services — you’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube, you’re famous from Instagram. It’s almost, like, it’s diluting the actor’s job.”
Setting it off
While Aniston basically said what a lot of people have been saying for years, as in people aren’t paying their dues, what’s missed is it’s a different path for people to make a name for themselves.
She’s not entirely wrong as actors go through training and have to win parts, but what’s missed is social media is another path for people to use to reach their goals and dreams.
Everyone finds their own way to achieve their dreams.
For some like Aniston, the key was having famous parents and being considered Hollywood royalty. Aniston’s parents are John Aniston (Days of Our Lives) and her late mother Nancy Dow (The Beverly Hillbillies and The Wild Wild West).
Aniston’s comments set off a barrage of responses calling her a “nepotism baby” as fans on Twitter unloaded on her for gatekeeping and trying to hold others back while she makes $20 million a year.
Others claimed she’s missing the point as social media is allowing others to find their fame when they probably couldn’t any other way.
As with most things, there’s plenty of common ground to be found, and we’re interested in seeing how Aniston will respond to the backlash she’s received.
