Jussie Smollett maintains that he did not lie about the alleged attack on him in January 2019. On a June 22, 2022, episode of Sway in the Morning, Smollett continued to push that stance when the discussion came around to it.
Jussie Smollett Says “If I’d Done This I’d Be a Piece of Sh**” As He Continues to Deny That 2019 Attack Was a Hoax
The singer and actor noted that believing the conclusion that the jury came to in his trial would be like finding out that “someone is exactly the opposite of who they claim to be.” Smollett said if he’d done what he was convicted of doing “I’d be a piece of sh*t.”
His stance on this comes from his statement in court during sentencing—which he repeated in part on the show:
“If I did this, then it means that I stuck my fist in the fears of black Americans in this country for over 400 years and the fears of the LGBTQ community.”
He also mentioned that a hoax wouldn’t have been necessary as he was still on the rise as an actor and had projects lined up. Lying and the resulting backlash would’ve thrown those plans off track.
All points would be true but given the evidence against him, more than a strong conviction that he’s not a piece of sh*t is necessary. Also on the show, Jussie Smollett went into his six-and-a-half days of fasting saying he had never been as clear of mind in his adult life.
On March 10, 2022, the 40-year-old performer was sentenced to 150 days, had to pay the city over $120,000, and was fined $25,000. After his fasting period, he was released on March 16 after the appeals court sent down a 2-1 decision in his favor. After posting his personal recognizance bond of $150,000, he was a free man—at least for now.
