On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, the first hearing in the lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s parents started but they weren’t in attendance. The parents of Gabby Petito maintain that Laundrie’s parents knew about their son’s whereabouts during both the missing person’s search for their daughter.
The Hearing into the Civil Lawsuit Against Brian Laundrie’s Parents Filed by Gabby Petito’s Family Begins
The lawsuit claims that Brian’s parents—Christopher and Roberta Laundrie—knew where the body of Gabby Petito could be found and helped their son in hiding the murder. It is also alleged that they were also planning to get Brian out of the country.
In addition, it is claimed that Roberta Laundrie blocked Nicole Schmidt’s phone number and Facebook to avoid helping with information about where Gabby could be found.
The lawsuit was filed in March 2022 and the family of Gabby Petito is seeking $30,000 in damages for mental anguish. Also, the 22-year-old’s family wants a trial by jury in the matter.
Judge Hunter W. Carroll is presiding over the hearing and it is believed a decision could be reached about the next step by next week. If Judge Carroll finds in favor of the Petito family, a trial would be scheduled for next year.
The Search for Gabby Petito in Late 2021
Gabby Petito left Florida with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in June 2021. By the end of August 2021, Laundrie strangled Petito to death in Utah and returned home. In September 2021, following a missing person search, the body of Gabby was found—but Brian was missing.
A month later, after his parents filed a missing person report in September, the remains of Brian Laundrie were found at a reserve in Sarasota County, Florida. The journal that police discovered broke the case into Gabby’s murder but left a mystery as to why she was killed.
