Based on Queen Elizabeth II‘s current mobility challenge, a lot of things have changed in the Palace as the Queen has reduced her activities to the least. The most recent change however is on her roles as the Queen. According to an annual report that was released as the Sovereign Grant accounts in the previous week, and was signed by the keeper of the privy purse, Sir Michael Stevens—who is in charge of the Royal Household’s financial management, the Queen’s workload has been made lighter.
The reports state that the Queen’s roles have been reduced. Rather than the 13 roles she used to have, which includes receiving Prime ministers, her duties have been separated into two sections-Head of state and Head of Nation. Other “must fulfill duties” like the State Opening of Parliament has been taken off the list.
For the First Time in Ten Years, Queen Elizabeth’s Role Rewritten Due To Her Mobility Issues
Based on the Queen’s issue with movement, she has been absent at a number of events that were held this year and has had members of the Royal family stand in for her in those cases. The State Opening Parliament for example, she had her son, Prince Charles stand in for her and he was supported by her grandson, Prince William.
The Queen’s role as Head of State is to “provide a sense of continuity, a focus for loyalty and an assurance of political independence and neutrality” while her roles as the Head of Nation has “unity and national identity, continuity and stability, achievement and success and support of service” as the vital elements, all according to the report.
The Queen recently addressed the public on the Palace’s balcony on Sunday where she thanked people around the world. She said that she was “touched” that a large number of people took to the streets to celebrate her platinum jubilee.
She also added that, “while I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all and remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.”
