California U.S Marshals are still searching for Leonard Glenn Francis, the Malaysian defense contractor also known as “Fat Leonard.” Francis escaped house arrest in early September 2022 while awaiting sentencing in a corruption scandal that included the Navy.
Malaysian Defense Contractor “Fat Leonard” Still on the Run After Escaping House Arrest as Sentencing Looms
After cutting off his GPS bracelet and dumping it in a water cooler, Fat Leonard escaped his home in San Diego on September 4, 2022. He was weeks away from being sentenced after pleading guilty in January 2015 for his role in a corruption scandal.
The CEO of Glenn Marine Group, Leonard Glenn Francis worked with the U.S Navy via his subsidiary group—Glenn Defense Marine Asia—and was involved in bribing a number of officers. These bribes included prostitutes, travel expenses, luxury goods, and at least half a million in cash for sensitive information about the movements of the U.S military as well as investigations into his group.
Basically, he got officers to compromise the operations and safety of fellow officers. In 2015, he admitted to defrauding the Navy out of tens of millions of dollars by overbilling it for years of services. In bribing the officers, he was able to get into—and remain in—a favorable position for contracts.
The U.S Marshals tweeted about the escape of Fat Leonard and are asking the public for help if they have information about his whereabouts:
