Coming into 2022, fans were worried about the future of Ring of Honor. 2021 was a rough year, closing out with the company going on hiatus – and most of its roster being released from their contracts. Supercard of Honor was always planned to happen in April, but before Tony Khan bought the company – ticket sales were low. Under the guide of Tony Khan, Ring Of Honor has regained a lot of fans – and we now know just how much he spent to get his hands on this legendary company.
Tony Khan Will Never Take AEW Public Or Sell It
While speaking with Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, he’d stand firm on a stance of never selling AEW – and addressed comparisons to WCW. Khan would be quoted saying the following.
“My goal is to keep this going forever. I think it’s not even an apples to apples comparison with Eric Bischoff’s WCW, because he had a lot of things working against him being owned by another company and not being able to make his decisions for the livelihood of the promotion, and not getting rights fees for TV and a lot of other things that I’m sure Eric would point out. But at the end of the day, my goal, I would compare this more like Jim Crockett promotions. I don’t ever want to have to be in a position … I’m never gonna put myself in a position where we have to sell this business as long as I’m alive.”
Khan Bought Ring Of Honor For Around Four Million Dollars
When asked how much he spent to acquire Ring of Honor, Tony Khan would not give an exact number – but said it was less than Jim Crockett Promotions paid to get the UWF. JCP paid 4.2 million dollars to buy out UWF.
“I think this is the start of a really big time for us. So in talking about some of that…it’s a relevant comparison. Like I said, I think the promotion AEW is probably more like Jim Crockett Promotions, and honestly acquiring Ring of Honor, it’s different. I paid a lot less for Ring of Honor than they paid for the UWF man. Yeah.”
