In a massive cocaine bust for authorities in Brazil, roughly 1,140 kg of product was seized during the weekend of October 7, 2022.
The report out of Brazil doesn’t detail the bust or what made this vehicle suspicious. What we do know is that the vehicle was en route to Salvador, a major port city and the capital of the Bahia in northeastern Brazil.
Brazilian Authorities Seize Over 1,000 Grams of Cocaine Hidden in Cat Litter – Street Worth of Roughly $39M
Federal Highway Police—known in Brazil as the PDFs—in the bordering state of Minas Gerias to the south pulled over the truck which appeared to be loaded with just cat litter—and a lot of it.
Similar to the North American borders and highways, certain routes are prime for trafficking. Soon enough, the drug-sniffing dogs were called in.
“Thanks to sniffer dogs, agents found around 1,140 kilos of cocaine in bags hidden under a cargo of cat litter,” according to a statement from the PRF. The drugs have a street value of about $39 million.
Brazil is considered to be a hotbed for the international drug trade as coke arrives from elsewhere in South America—particularly from Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru.
Once cocaine arrives in the country, what isn’t meant for domestic distribution is smuggled out of Brazil from Salvador or Santos for ports in Africa and Europe.
