At one Nottingham club has gotten some negative attention after promoting a serial killer-themed Halloween event. One Rock City employee—Maddie Buchi—would even issue an open letter of protest before quitting.
Nottingham Night Club Apologizes for Promoting Serial Killer-Themed Halloween Event
The event was promoted using pictures of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and British serial killer Rose West. Plans were for the event to go down on its Crisis night which is held on Wednesdays for University of Nottingham students.
When Buchi saw this, she was offended by the concept and voiced her disapproval. She feels that it would be triggering for sexual assault victims and others who go to a night club saying:
“I think it was triggering for many people in the club to see students dressed up as these people, to see posters of these people, pictures of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacey. It is triggering for victims as well. I mean victims of sexual assault don’t want to go to a club, a place run for students that is supposed to feel safe and fun, and be greeted by these people’s faces.”
Crisis would publicly apologize for promoting the theme and now it’s promoted similarly to previous “AllFrighter” events. It was also acknowledged how it could be viewed negatively.
“We have updated our theme for this event to a generic Halloween theme,” a statement on the “AllFrighter” site says. “We wish to apologise to anyone who was offended by the previous theme.”
On the organizers’ decision to change the theme, Buchi was pleased but believes that the organizers need to ask themselves why the theme was considered anyway:
“I’m very pleased that they have changed it of course but I think it needs to be looked into why it happened in the first place and their thought process behind it so nothing like this happens again.”
Crisis expressed that it wasn’t the idea of the student union at the University of Nottingham and that they would reach out to Buchi about the situation. The organizers also stated that they would run themes and ideas by their audience in the future.
