Prince Harry announced that he is writing a memoir last year, and ever since, the world is in great anticipation to see what he wrote in it.
The name of the book ‘Spare’ refers to the quite literal meaning of the word, taken from the phrase ‘heir and spare’. In Prince Harry’s case, he is the spare prince, while Prince William is first in line for King Charles’ throne.

The news about Prince Harry working on a book came mid-2021. Then, the publication date was set for November 2021, however, due to the tragic death of Prince Harry’s grandmother, the publication has been postponed for a couple of months. The new announcement of the release date came via an Instagram post by the publisher of the book.
“SPARE! It is the highly anticipated #PrinceHarryMemoir. It will air on January 10, 2023.” – the publisher Penguin Random House wrote on Thursday. “We are excited to bring to readers everywhere the remarkably personal and emotionally powerful story of Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. For Harry, this is his story at last.”
According to the publisher of the book, this will be a publication where Prince Harry opened his heart and mind to tell his side of his life story with “raw, unflinching honesty”. Penguin Random House adds that the book is full of “insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
The book has a chapter on Princess Diana’s death. People consider this to be one of the toughest moments in Prince Harry’s life. The book brings us back to 1997 and repaints the picture of Prince Harry and his brother Prince William “walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow — and horror.”
“As Diana, Princess of Wales was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling. And how their lives would play out from that point on.” – the publisher’s statement about the chapter reads.
Interestingly, the publishers are expecting the book to do massively good. They will publish it in 16 languages. An audiobook is in the planning as well, and will be as authentic as it can get – it will be read by Prince Harry himself.
At the moment, there is no information on how much will the Prince pocket from the book. However, analysts suspect that the amount is in the millions. The Duke of Sussex revealed that he will use a part of the money to donate to British charities.
Penguin Random House refers to Prince Harry in superlatives. They say that he is a great husband, great father, humanitarian, one of the loudest mental wellness advocates, and a military veteran.
Whether these claims are true or not, there have been numerous speculations. While many people agree with it, many are disagreeing and claim that the Prince is not as advertised in the embedded marketing.
The book will not be the first media that will reveal details from the private life of Prince Harry. He showed willingness to profit from his private stories long ago. The first time he took the stand was in 2021. He and Meghan Markle and appeared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. There they revealed how they were unhappy with their life in the United Kingdom. They spoke about how they feared for Meghan Markle’s life. According to them, people in England have some level of racism. Meghan Markle received much of it while there. Furthermore, they put this as the main reason why they couldn’t continue their life in England.
So, it is like history is repeating itself. He speaks about the pressure he felt in the UK. Kind of the same as his mother, Princess Diana told in her memoir, “Diana: Her True Story”. She spoke about the pressure and harassment she lived through in the palace. Amongst other things, she told how unhappy her marriage with King Charles III was.

During his interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry explained how his family cut him off financially after he moved to the US in 2020. He explained how he was paying for everything with the money that his mother, Princess Diana left for him. After the interview, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to go a step further. They open up about everything and agree to film a docu-series for Netflix.
The series will air at the beginning of next year, around the same time as the book. So it will be interesting to see what Prince Harry has to say about his ‘former life’. There have been numerous controversies surrounding the upcoming series already. However, at the moment there are no details available as it is undergoing excessive editing.
It is certain that there will be much criticism of the book as well. However, the publisher is happy about the collaboration with Prince Harry.
