A Brunswick, Georgia man pleaded guilty to the September 2019 murder of Kevin Holmes on November 28, 2022. The incident in question occurred outside of a Walmart in North Charleston, South Carolina where Ke’Varius Sparks (22) shot Holmes in the face before escaping.
Georgia Man Sentenced to 45 Years in Prison After Pleading Guilty to the Murder of Kevin Holmes in South Carolina
North Charleston authorities charged Sparks with the victim surviving. That keeps this in lesser offense territory—at least until Holmes died of his wounds. Detectives focused on Sparks while the investigation into him. A search of his property turned up a pair of jeans and a burnt sweatshirt, the same clothes the suspect wore during the shooting.
Police also said that during an interview, Sparks admitted to killing Kevin Holmes and dumping the gun in a pond near the crime scene. Despite being the main suspect in a murder, he was released on bail in December 2020 and returned to Georgia.
The bail was revoked in October 2022 when he was arrested for armed robbery, possessing a weapon during a violent crime, and kidnapping. Sparks was being held in Georgia but was transported to South Carolina for Holmes’ murder trial.
While he was given 45 years, the prosecution was aiming for a life sentence. According to the prosecution:
“His children and family lost him forever over what we estimate to be just $200. While this sentence will never bring Mr. Holmes back, we hope that the family can take solace that justice was finally brought today.”
