The AEW Women’s World Championship reign of Thunder Rosa did not get a satisfying ending, with Rosa being forced to step away from the ring due to an injury. Originally, an Interim AEW Women’s World Champion was named, but as it became clear that Rosa would not return to the ring in 2022 – her reign would officially end following Full Gear 2022. Despite this, Rosa is still pushing to return to the ring soon – potentially as soon as February.
Thunder Rosa Is Set To Return In Time For Revolution 2023
An update from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer would give the following information, coming from a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer had the following to say.
“The last word we’d heard was she hoped to be back in February. There were a lot of people who thought she would be Saraya’s mystery partner against Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter on 1/11 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, but the last word on her return was February.”
A February return would allow AEW to set up Thunder Rosa vs. Jamie Hayter for the AEW Women’s World Championship at Revolution 2023, which is set for March 5th in San Francisco. Even without the potential of a unification match available, there’s more than enough for a title match – with a champion not losing a belt being a classic storyline device. Some felt Saraya would be next to challenge, but it’s more likely they save that match for AEW’s upcoming debut in London in 2023.
Fan responses to Rosa have flipped since her injury, with reports of backstage bullying both in AEW and at indy shows not helping the situation. However, it’s not a situation like CM Punk where the locker room was refusing to work with him. Rosa has a chance to easily rebuild her reputation in 2023 by simply changing her ways.
