The DOJ announced that Pedro Alejandro Rubio-Perez pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine and marijuana. Rubio-Perez was the leader of a Baja California outfit that ran drugs into the U.S from 1999 until 2009.

Rubio-Perez’s operation made use of tractor-trailer trucks that had hidden compartments. Obviously, these compartments were to hide drugs and the approach worked for some time. The Department of Justice reported that there were times when Rubio-Perez’s men had $2 million on them to deliver from his share of sales.
In total, his operation smuggled over 450 kilograms of coke and 45,000 kilograms of marijuana into the U.S. Rubio-Perez was eventually nabbed in November 2013 on both drug trafficking and organized crime offenses.
He was extradited to the U.S two years later but it wasn’t until 2018 that he took a plea deal to avoid what was definitely going to be some time behind bars. Pedro Alejandro Rubio-Perez was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
