The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office was faced with a hostage situation that ended in a man—who held a gun to his child—being arrested in Jonestown, Mississippi. The incident occurred on January 9, 2023 and things didn’t end with the man’s arrest.

Deputies arrived at an apartment complex in response to a child being shot. They would find Marquez Griffin with a gun pointed at his child. However, the child didn’t appear to be suffering from gunshot wounds. The call that this was a hostage situation involving a child resulted in a stronger response to the scene.
After some time, deputies were able to get Griffin to drop his gun, allowing the child to be rescued. He was immediately arrested and deputies began searching the apartment for the child that had been shot. They would discover two children with gunshot wounds.
The girl, aged one, was pronounced dead on the scene while the nine-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities charged Marquez Griffin with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
