Nathan Chasing Horse (46) was arrested in Las Vegas after his home was raided by the police. Chasing Horse is best known as Smiles a Lot in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves. Since 2015, Chasing Horse has had run-ins with the law on several sexual abuse, human trafficking, and drug trafficking charges.
The raid on January 31, 2023, was a result of a lengthy investigation into the actor’s sex crimes going back over 20 years. The investigation also turned up cues that could point to Chasing Horse and the cult known as The Circle—believed to be led by the actor—being involved in murder.

SWAT raided his two-story home on the afternoon of January 31 and found him with his five wives. According to authorities, he was preparing to shoot it out with the police and readied his wives to take suicide pills.
The search warrant—50 pages in total—alleges that Chasing Horse sexually assaulted underage Native American girls. Authorities have identified six victims and incidents going back 20 years throughout Montana, South Dakota, and Nevada.
Looking at his film career, Chasing Horse doesn’t seem like he would cultivate a following that could grow into a cult. However, it is alleged that he parlayed his time in film and following among Native American audiences by becoming a spiritual healer.
This made him something of a name within the Lakota nation through his gatherings and performing ceremonies. The warrant states that Chasing Horse “used spiritual traditions and their belief system as a tool to sexually assault young girls on numerous occasions.” It also claims that he recorded several of the assaults and setting up some victims to have sex with men and receiving pay.
South Dakota has started its own division to handle crimes against Native Americans and the actor is likely to face charges there. This warrant focused on his crimes in Clark County and he is charged with sex trafficking of an adult, sexual assault, child abuse or neglect, and sex with a minor under 16.
The warrant lists victims who were 13 at the time of the alleged assaults. Two of his wives are said to have been minors when Chasing Horse married them. One of the wives was 15 when she was gifted to the medicine man while the other married him at 16.
The Las Vegas PD’s investigation into Nathan Chasing Horse began in October 2020. He is currently being held at the Clark County Jail.
