It’s finally been confirmed that we’re getting a new two hour live weekly show from All Elite Wrestling. Since 2019, the main weekly show for AEW has been Dynamite, airing primarily on Wednesday Nights.
AEW Rampage was added later on, but a bad late night Friday timeslot and it’s taped nature prevented it from reaching the same height. AEW Collision will fix this. Taking Saturday Nights for it’s home, this show will be live every week – and is set to pay homage to an iconic show in professional wrestling history.
AEW Collision To Pay Homage To WCW Monday Nitro – Which Aired On TNT In The 90’s
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer would report that AEW is hoping to make their new show have a similar look and feel to WCW Monday Nitro. Nitro ran for 6 years starting in the mid 90’s on TNT – the same TV network that Collision will air upon.
The show will pull inspiration from this show, which could mean anything from the stage design of the show, or even an in-ring style that will appeal to fans who watched religiously during the 90’s. There is still a lot of mystery around this new show which launches on June 17th – with talent not yet sure if a hard brand split is coming to AEW.
Imitation Is A Sincere Form Of Flattery
We have already seen a clear WCW influence with the logo of the show, with former WCW booker Eric Bischoff agreeing it’s a great logo. Bischoff said the following on his “Strictly Business” podcast about the similarities.
“”Allusion is a good word, but I say rip-off is a better one. The truth is it put a smile on my face and I guess imitation is a sincere form of flattery.”
