The rise of Jade Cargill in All Elite Wrestling was a sudden one. Originally brought in as the tag team partner of NBA Legend Shaq to face Cody Rhodes & Red Velvet, Cargill would remain undefeated in singles action – and became the inaugural TBS Champion.
Her winning streak would continue to grow, before she defended twice at Double Or Nothing 2023, defeating Taya Valkyrie but falling to a returning Kris Statlander. Since then, Cargill has vanished from TV – and her return status remains unclear.
Jade Cargill Is Figuring Out If An AEW Return Is The Right Move
We would get an update on her AEW status from Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, but Meltzer didn’t know much beyond that Cargill asked for some time off. Meltzer shared the following information.
“Nothing. Nothing past she’s considering not coming back, is what she said, which was the last thing we heard. She wanted to take some time off. Sometimes I feel like, boy, it’s like they pushed her and pushed her and pushed her and pushed her, and they never put her in the big matches. Then she’s gone.
Like a multi-year push, and yet they gave her that one belt, but she never, but I don’t know if that, there’s like, again, did she never wrestle Britt Baker? You know, she never wrestled Tony Storm. Almost like they kept them away from her, now she’s gone. So will she be back? I mean, she’s got a storyline to come back to.
I mean, they didn’t, you know, she lost, but she lost in a way where she had a gripe, but she’s gone. She never made the gripe. I don’t know what the future holds for her. She’s the only one who probably knows. Yeah. I mean, Maybe she’s still figuring it out.”
No Rush Required
We saw gradual improvements and hard work from Cargill, especially in the later half of 2022 and in 2023. She put extra work in behind the scenes with Bryan Danielson – and it was paying off. Because of all the work she put in, and the work AEW has put into her – a return is likely to come in time.
However, given the depth of the women’s division right now – there is no need to rush Cargill back. A rematch with Kris Statlander for the TBS Championship is an easy match to rebuild, even if it is held off until Full Gear later this year. Cargill will only benefit from some time away, making fans crave her to show up once again.
