In their next big PPV showdown, Vader welcomes Sting to the f***ing WHITE CASTLE OF FEAR! Sting hops on a plane and flies over mountains to face the Mastodon. They end up scheduling a strap match for SuperBrawl III. Since the two scheduled their match within the confines of the WHITE CASTLE OF FEAR and not through WCW, it was declared unsanctioned and the title wasn’t on the line.
WCW SuperBrawl III: Sting vs. Vader (Strap Match)
I dig the progression of this feud, folks. Their first big match was a straight up one-on-one fight which Sting won. This unsanctioned match saw the two engage in absolute war as Sting—now knowing how to deal with Vader on-on-one—really took the fight to him. Vader kept to his usual, effective approach of bombing his smaller foe with strikes and full body attacks.
Sting obviously utilized his speed but as with all of his matches involving Vader, eventually he was expend too much energy trying to keep him down. It would prove effective but killed that extra momentum needed to clinch the win.
That would give Vader a significant window of opportunity as he finally planted the Stinger with a massive superplex and went to touch the turnbuckles. Everything looked gucci for Vader until Sting’s inner fire flipped on and he restricted Vader’s movement with the strap. Of course, Vader begins pounding on Sting again in an attempt to snuff out that very fire.
Again, it seemed to work until the Stinger uses Vader’s weakness against him and catches him by surprise. Vader eats a rolling koppo kick and goes down. The crowd are eating this up and loses their collective sh** once Sting scores a massive German Suplex—yes, a suplex of German-origin—on the almost 400lbs monster!
“Swift, did you lose your sh** as well?” Of course, I did. It’s Sting, people! The Icon goes on to beat the daylights out of Vader and pulls his mask off—Vader is busted open! Such carnage! Sting uses his noodle and hoists all 400lbs of humanity onto his shoulders and carries him around the ring as he touches the corners.
Since the referee was knocked down earlier, the Stinger trips over his body and fails to touch the last turnbuckle. These referees, man. After banzai dropping across the Icon’s chest, Vader has effectively snuffed Sting’s fighting spirit. It’s an ember now. He ties the Stinger up and drags him around the ring as he touches the turnbuckles.
Sting gets a bit of second wind and struggles but Vader is able to continue dragging him until they get to the last turnbuckle. The face painted surfer manages to grab the bottom rope and stop Vader from reaching the last one. Vader approaches the downed Sting but his prey fights back and kicks him away—right into the final turnbuckle, giving the World champion the win.
Stinger Scale Rating
This one didn’t beat their Starrcade 1992 encounter but it was still a damn dope match. Sting’s last-ditch offense always hit like McDonald’s Sprite and Vader never really had to do anything other than punch and splash. However, when he did do something extra, it showed that Vader wasn’t just a one-trick pony and could reach into his bag of tricks if needed.
Sting matched this with a couple of tricks that he didn’t normally use and a fiery viciousness that he had to bring out to deal with Big Van Vader. This was another great chapter in one of WCW’s greatest feuds.
