Normally, smaller UK indies don’t make a stir or a sound overseas—at least until their talent gets picked up for NXT UK or something. However, one match for the Colliery Championship Wrestling promotion has made some buzz for itself for possibly the wrong reason.
UK Hardcore Match Escalates into Blood Splattered Death Match at Family Show
The match was the main event of Colliery Championship Wrestling’s Pits of Punishment show on April 29, 2022. Originally billed as a “3 out of 5 Doors match”, it appears that the stipulation was for the victor to put their opponent through…three out of five doors.
I looked into CCW a bit and it’s based in a Seaham, located in Durham County. The county was a mining hub in the late 19th and early 20th century—hence Colliery Championship Wrestling.
Since the promotion embraces the coal mining history of the area, matches and shows tend to be a mix of traditional and sometimes hardcore wrestling.
Although, with a show called Pits of Punishment, you kind of have an inkling that there could be some extreme wrestling or deathmatches on the card. This show was oddly promoted as an all-ages show and there were children in attendance when Ronnie Thatcher and Blizzard cranked the danger up with everything but doors.
See, the doors would’ve been fine since they’re basically tables. It’s once glass, other weapons, and a weed whacker came into play. Like, holy 2002, that would probably get the Wifebeater Seal of Approval.
Of course, the two bleed all over the place and now Colliery Championship Wrestling is being investigated. In a statement, the police said:
“We are working with Durham County Council’s licensing team after a number of complaints were received by the local authority in relation to an event at Seaham Conservative Club on April 29. Inquiries are ongoing.”
Promotion CEO, James Brass has apologized for the extreme content and said that he spoke with both Ronnie Thatcher and Blizzard in the aftermath.
“Things can sometimes not go to plan. Obviously there was a little bit more that went down. I spoke to the two guys afterward. We had discussions and obviously, that will not be happening again.”
