In case you were wondering, the best period of the year for the 53-year-old singer Mariah Carey is winter. And this is not because she loves the cold and the snow. It is because each year, around this period she gets more and more money from royalties for her greatest hit ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.
It is like the radio stations, television and social media can’t wait for the Christmas period, so they can drown us in the lyrics of the song. Malls, supermarkets, metros, train stations, you hear the song wherever you go and whatever you do.
Trial Against Mariah Carey For Stealing The Idea For Her Greatest Hit ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’
Starting from 1994, and until now, the singer made more than $100 million just from royalties on this one song. That comes close to $4 million per year.
According to TMZ reports, a trial is heading the famous singer’s way. A trial regarding her iconic song. The accusations claim nothing more and nothing less, but that the hit has stolen the topic.
“Mariah is being sued for copyright infringement by Andy Stone, who says he co-wrote and recorded a song called “All I Want For Christmas Is You” a couple of years before MC dropped her famous track with that title.”
The report states that Doug Stone records a song with the same title in 1989, 5 years before Mariah’s hit. Before Mariah drops a song with the same name, Doug Stone claims that his song is even appearing on the Billboard charts back in 1993.
However, this accusation and this trial may be totally unsupported with any sense behind it. Both songs have different lyrics completely, the only similarity is the mention of the title somewhere in the verse of the song. So, winning this trial will be very tricky for Stone. Even better, impossible.
Lastly, it is not clear why did the singer wait for so long to take this step. After 33 years since his song came out, and after 27 years of Mariah’s hit it is somewhat irrational to file a lawsuit. Determining whether this is a solid case, or not will write the future of this claim.
Mariah Carey’s fans react to this and are strongly supportive of the singer. They claim that even if the two songs have a title in common, everything else is completely different.
Lastly, Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff write the lyrics of the song. According to the singer, the purpose of the song is solely to become a hit for the Christmas season. Expectedly, it turns out to be a massive success.
“Back then, you didn’t have a lot of artists with Christmas albums. It wasn’t a known science at all back then, and there was nobody who did new, big Christmas songs.” – the co-author Afanasieff says. What do you think? Is there a ground for filing a lawsuit?
