Mick Foley Gives Thoughts On AEW’s 2021 Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch With Kenny Omega

Few men have given more of their body to the professional wrestling industry than Mick Foley. From his time in the Japanese deathmatch scene to his horrific Hell in a Cell match with The Undertaker, Foley has done just about it all. He’s the authority on deathmatch wrestling, and knows what works and what doesn’t – and doesn’t feel that that style is right for Kenny Omega, as proven by the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch against Jon Moxley from 2021.

Mick Foley Doesn’t Think Barbed Wire And Kenny Omega Come Together Well

Foley would talk about this match on the latest edition of the ‘Foley Is Pod’ podcast while speaking of his King of The Deathmatch win in the 90’s, and wasn’t exactly a fan of it. He’d have the following to say about it being a bad fit for Omega.

“I’m not sure barbed wire is the best way to take advantage of Kenny’s huge gifts. They had a little trouble with the stipulations.” Foley would say, noting the underwhelming finish and reactions to the match. “You either stay on one side of the road or the other. If you design it to be in the middle, it gets squashed like a grape, even if that’s just emotionally.”

Tony Khan Wanted To Try Again

Tony Khan has expressed interest in trying that match type again, but an equally poor received barbed wire match between Chris Jericho & Eddie Kingston doesn’t help the case. It’s a hard match type to do, and requires two men who are fully committed to the danger of the match.

It is looking unlikely that AEW will not run this match again for a few years, with Blood & Guts and Lights Out matches likely being the peak of violence in the promotion. Kenny Omega in particular has been kept away from stipulations since that match – sticking to straight up singles matches and trios matches alongside The Young Bucks. Omega has learned what works in his style, and we can’t expect to see him deviate from that in years to come.

Right now, it looks like Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks will be in trios action against Death Triangle at Full Gear 2022 – their first match since All out 2022. Did you enjoy the Moxley vs. Omega Barbed Wire Deathmatch? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
