Dwyane Wade‘s child who identifies as transgender, Zaya, has acquired official recognition of the new identity.
NBA Star Dwyane Wade’s Child Legally Becomes Trans
On Friday, 24th February 2023, a court official in Los Angeles County accepted the new legal identity of the fifteen-year-old, as reported by TMZ.
This was after the teenager’s father had filed a request with the court back in August 2022, expressing his pride in the move.
The adolescent is now lawfully recognized as a female, and her authentic legal name is Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. In February 2020, Zaya, a child of Dwyane and his ex-partner Siohvaughn Funches, declared the transgender identity.
The former NBA player and Funches, who went their separate ways in 2010 after being married for eight years, did not agree on how to take care of the situation.
The 41-year -old athlete has consistently supported Zaya’s right, while Funches, also of the same age, has accused the ex of pushing their child to for the purpose of making money on the back end off it.
That did not sit very well with Dwyane who let everyone know in no uncertain terms that this was not the case.
In his comments, he said: “While it certainly would have been preferable for Zaya’s mother to be supportive of this important part of Zaya’s journey, Zaya should not be forced to put her life on hold while she waits for Siohvaughn to acknowledge and accept her truth.”
However, Funches argued that Zaya should wait until she was 18 years old before she made any changes to her identity, still referring to her daughter by her previous name, “Zion”.
The following comments confirmed as much: “I’m very disappointed that [Funches] continuously finds ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children.”
