WWE Hall of Famer and AEW coach/commentator Mark Henry regularly does the rounds of wrestling podcasts and often has some interesting takes on the business. While speaking with the Attitude Era podcast, he went the actual reason why he left WWE and let it be known that it wasn’t a back-and-forth, heart-wrenching decision.
AEW Coach-Commentator Mark Henry Says That Leaving WWE Wasn’t the Hardest Decision to Make
What things came down to was Mark Henry wanting to have a backstage role–or as he says “the executive side.” Of course, for over a decade, the World’s Strongest Man wrestled most of the time and did promotional stuff when he wasn’t in the arena.
That means he never received or had time to develop the skills needed or desired for the positions he wanted. In his words via Wrestling Inc:
“I never went back and forth. I left after I retired. I wanted to be more on the executive side, they wouldn’t hire me on the executive side. I didn’t have enough experience, the technical education, and going to AEW proved that I knew what I was doing.”
After his retirement in 2017, Mark Henry took on a producer role backstage. By 2021, that role morphed into a mentor position where the focus was on backstage harmony and the presentation of superstars outside of the company. In signing with AEW, he found his way back to his original position where he could contribute more to the creative side of the business.
