Sorn, who is known for being a member of the hit K-Pop group CLC, has denied claims that she is a colourist.
K-Pop Star Sorn Denies Claims That She Is A Colourist-‘I Definitely Do Not Stand For Colourism’
The term colourist refers to the idea of racial discrimination based on a person’s skin tone with a particular preference for lighter shades. And this is precisely the last thing that Sorn was thinking about being called in response to one of her videos.
In a video, which has now been deleted, the K-pop star was discussing a TikTok fad where people were debating what gifts they would give to certain celebrities or fictional characters.
The ‘gifts’ that were on her mind centred around skincare products. And given that the TV show ‘Squid Game’ has been so popular in Korea as well as globally, that is what she decided to focus on.
And yet, her choice of characters raised serious concerns. Sorn had decided to recommend the most skincare products to the character Ali, who is played by Anupam Tripathi.
Given that he is the only non-Korean actor within the show, some people felt that her views were discriminatory. This is particularly true when the other characters in the show were only recommended minimal skincare products.
The response on social media was mixed. Although some saw nothing wrong with what she had done, others were less forgiving as they felt she was recommending whitening products. One fan wrote: “I’m all for ‘get sorn off of the internet because she’s embarrassing.’
“But this is colourist af, and she needs to get her shit together and realize how offensive this is,” while another stated: “How is this colourist.”
Nevertheless, the criticism forced Sorn to issue a public apology. Given that she has fans across the globe, there were obvious concerns that she may have alienated them.
In response, she denied being a colourist: “I definitely do not stand for colourism or discrimination of any kind and would never perpetuate such ideas through my content.
“I will make sure I consider carefully how all content I appear in may be perceived.” Time will tell whether there will be any further repercussions from this. But in the meantime, Sorn should be more careful over her conduct.
