One of the biggest stories in professional wrestling right now is in regards to Cody Rhodes and his AEW contract status. It was reported last week that he was technically a free agent, with his AEW contract having expired. Now, with him losing the TNT Championship to Sammy Guevara – fans are more curious than ever before on just what is happening with his contract.
Cody Rhodes Confirms He’s Working With AEW Through A Handshake Deal
On the AEW YouTube channel, a backstage interview with an emotional Cody Rhodes would be uploaded. During this, he would provide an update on his contract status – stating the following.
“There’s so many elephants in the room. This is an insane week in wrestling. People think that the Sean Ross Sapp story is bs — it’s not. I am working here without a contract. I’m not even on payroll anymore. I’m working here on a handshake deal. That is 100% legitimate, I swear on Pharaoh’s life if you want to know how serious things got.”
Still An EVP, Unlikely To Show Up For WWE
A handshake deal is just that, a deal with nothing on paper. Just both parties having mutual trust. In an industry like professional wrestling, a lot of trust would be needed for a deal like this. It certainly helps that Rhodes is one of the names who started up AEW, and remains an EVP.
Right now, Rhodes doesn’t seem likely to show up in WWE – even for the Royal Rumble. He’s loyal to AEW regardless of contract status, but is taking a step back to find out where he fits into the company after losing the TNT Championship back to Sammy Guevara. AEW are not likely to put a title on someone without a solid contract however, which could be why the TNT Championship recently changed hands.
