The first title match of the NXT UK restart is already here, as Kay Lee Ray faces an old rival in Piper Niven. They’ve faced each other all around the world, and Niven has the winning record in this feud, but this is a new more devious Kay Lee Ray than she’s ever faced before. Will we see a new NXT UK Women’s Champion be crowned?
Piper Niven Gets Cut Down
Despite no crowd, this one had a big match feel. Kay Lee Ray would take her time getting this match started, trying to get into the head of Niven. She’d lure Niven in, hit a kick to the gut before applying an armbar in the middle of the ring, before moving into a double wrist lock and then just sending clubbing blows onto the arm. Niven would remain in this hold for a while, eventually sending KLR into the corner.
KLR would pick the leg, but be shoved off into the ropes and be dropped with a shoulder tackle, before being thrown across the ring multiple times. Niven set up the Michinoku Driver, but KLR slipped out only to be hit with a big headbutt, maintaining control with a headlock. KLR tried to use the ropes to break the hold, but this just knocked them to the mat, and she wound up in a rear naked choke.
This hold wouldn’t stick, and KLR slipped out and started working over the knee of Niven with a Figure Four like hold with an added chin lock. A quick leg breaker from KLR ended this, but did some serious damage, but Niven managed to hit a hip toss over the top rope before falling to the ground to smack some feeling into the leg.
Kay Lee Ray Might Have Blown Her Knee Out
Niven followed KLR outside, only to be hit by a superkick and a tornado DDT on the mats. KLR could have taken a count-out win, but where’s the fun in that? You can’t send a message that way… or can you. Niven was propped against the steps, and KLR ran in for a knee strike, but Niven dodged at the last second, sending her knee first into the steel.
Following this, KLR couldn’t stand, but she claimed she was fine. Doctors would come check her out, putting this match in peril. Referees helped her to the back, and Niven was obviously frustrated, before telling KLR she didn’t want to take her title like this.
The prospect that she’d lose this match even with a potential knee injury enraged KLR, who slapped the taste out of Nivens mouth, only to get a receipt and get thrown back in the ring. This one will continue, with both ladies fired up.
Niven Attacks The Knee, KLR Has To Play Smart
Like any smart wrestler would, Niven went right after the knee of KLR, taking four seconds on the rope break to put more damage on that knee. KLR slapped some feeling into the knee, getting a superkick and hobbling to the top rope for a picture perfect senton bomb with an awkward landing. She’d will herself on after a near fall, but have the leg kicked out from underneath her and hit with a senton.
A slap to the face and a low superkick, but KLR collapsed out of pain into the corner. Niven would yank her out, but KLR took the pad off the bottom turnbuckle in the process. A submission would be applied to the injured knee, but KLR narrowly slipped out and tried for the Gory Bomb but the leg gave out, and the Niven Driver would be hit. KLR just got her foot on the rope to save this match.
Niven went to the second rope for the Vader Bomb, and KLR had to put the knees up to save herself, doing more damage to the injured one. She’d take refuge in the exposed corner, as Niven sets up the cannonball senton, and KLR dodged, getting the pinfall after Niven nails the exposed steel!
You rarely see injury angles in matches done as well as this, with KLR selling the leg wonderfully and managing to win using her high in-ring IQ. This feud is far from over, with this match only scratching the surface of what these two can do. Do you like how this match concluded? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
