Andy Ruiz Jr shocked the world in June 2019 when he became the first Mexican heavyweight champion when inflicting a shock knockout defeat on previously undefeated Anthony Joshua.
Although he later lost the rematch in Saudi Arabia, Ruiz Jr’s career was heightened in importance, and he will now be targeting a second unlikely shot at the world title. His first step to that target will take place in April, as he returns to the ring to take on Chris Arreola in a fight that was announced on Tuesday night.

Boxing fans have been stunned by the transformation made by the former Mexican world champion, as pictures emerged on social media showing Ruiz having lost a huge amount of weight. The 31-year-old spoke at length about his attitude heading into his rematch against Joshua in December 2019, and revealed that he was in the completely wrong mindset for the fight against Joshua.
However, there will be no questions surrounding his preparation for the fight in April, as he looked like a completely different fighter in the recent images that were posted online. His image isn’t the only thing that has changed, as he has shaken up his team behind the scenes too, as he is now working with Eddy Reynoso, who has a proven track record with world champions such as Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia. However, all the preparation would have been worth nothing if he doesn’t return with a win against Arreola next month.

His opponent in April has a proven reputation of being in the ring with some of the most dominant heavyweights in the history of the sport. He is also a former world title contender in his own right, as he last fought for the title back in 2016 as he was beaten via eighth round stoppage by Deontay Wilder.
He has won 38 of his 47 professional fighters, which also includes one draw and two non-contests. Arreola also fought for the WBC world title earlier in his career after going on a run of 27-0, but he was unable to overcome the challenge posed by Vitali Klitschko in Los Angeles in September 2009. His last fight came in August 2019, as he was beaten by unanimous decision by Adam Kownacki.
