Malakai Black made an instant impact in AEW when he went after Cody Rhodes. It was a risky play, but Rhodes fell with ease much to the shock of fans everywhere. After this, Black would pick away at The Nightmare Family, taking out Arn Anderson, Brock Anderson, Lee Johnson, and Dustin Rhodes. Now, Cody Rhodes is back and looking for revenge in the much anticipated rematch.
Malakai Black Is Here To Kill
The mere presence of Malakai Black was enough to intimidate most men, but Cody Rhodes isn’t most men. He’d rise to the occasion tonight, and redeem another crushing loss. His epic entrance is one of hope, as he rises out of the patented Cody Tunnel, and has Arn Anderson at his back – as well as Brandi Rhodes! The last loss had Rhodes considering retirement, but pro wrestling runs through his blood.
Bell would ring, and Black popped up out of the corner and starred a hole through Rhodes. Rhodes got a single leg but was fought off, and Black went for one of his own. They’d look for some holds on the mat but had a stalemate. Trading strikes wasn’t wise for Rhodes, but the dropdown throat thrust worked until Black hit a leg sweep.
Rhodes fled the ring as Black taunted, with Brandi Rhodes getting in to distract Black. Black wouldn’t be outdone, and got Cody Rhodes into an Octopus Hold. Rhodes got a kick to the head, sending Black to the outside. He’d dive towards Black, and took a leaping knee strike and crashed to the ground.
Cody Rhodes Gets A Face Full Of Mist
Back in the ring, Rhodes threw some quick strikes before being sent to the mat with a single kick. Black made Rhodes rise for the Black Mass, but Rhodes was ready to dodge. A knee lift and Meteora would help to set up a near fall, before Rhodes took Black Mass and fell outside. Back in the ring, Rhodes got a rope break and was able to hit a chop block.
Black would miss a knee in the corner and hurt his knee. Rhodes looked for a dragon screw in the ropes, and was working away at the leg power of Black. Take away the legs – and you take away the kicks. However a back elbow caught Rhodes and Black would hit a kick. Damage stopped him from following up, but he was still able to toss a running Rhodes.
Black would look for the kick, but Rhodes slipped out for Cody Cutter and Cross Rhodes for a two count. Arn Anderson slipped off the apron, before getting back up and having Rhodes thrown into him. Rhodes hit a pump kick and would check on Anderson who told him to get back to business. Black was put into a corner, but had some Black Mist, which allowed a roll up win.
A longer match than last time, and more evenly matched – while showing Black is an absolute killer. Rhodes had to work hard to even get some damage on Black, who was crafty enough to overcome. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
