Chris Cuomo has been fired from his position with CNN after it was revealed that he advised his brother Andrew Cuomo during the flood of sexual misconduct allegations dating back to December 2020.
Chris Cuomo Advised Brother on Navigating Allegations
The older Cuomo brother stepped down as governor of New York in August and in November, CNN placed Chris under “indefinite suspension” after the attorney general’s office revealed documents that showed that he was working with the governor in a damage control role.
Chris Cuomo FIRED From CNN for Using Sources to Feed Information During Brother’s Sexual Misconduct Allegations
He addressed the suspension on his SiriusXM show Let’s Get After It stating: ”You know this already. It hurts to even say it. It’s embarrassing, but I understand it. And I understand why some people feel the way they do about what I did. I’ve apologized in the past. I mean it.”
In addition to walking the former governor through this situation based on his own experience, he also fed Andrew Cuomo’s aide Melissa DeRosa information on accusers and upcoming reports.
This was all supposedly done while he managed to not be directly involved in the coverage of his brother’s allegations on the network’s broadcasting. Days later he was cut from the network as more details were received during his suspension.
CNN’s statement on firing Cuomo reads:
“Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense. We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately.”
The former governor’s situation points to a significant thing: Cuomo compromised journalistic standards—his and the network’s. In his own statement on his firing, Cuomo said that while he didn’t want his time at CNN to end on this note, he was proud of his team on Cuomo Prime and that “I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.”
Prior to heading to CNN in 2013, Cuomo had a major role in breaking stories for ABC and was on several of the network’s news programs.
In September 2021, he was accused of sexual harassment by former ABC executive producer Shelley Ross via a New York Times op-ed. The incident occurred during a farewell party in 2005 where he grabbed her butt.
Instead of demanding his job, Ross wanted him to repent journalistically—meaning on air. Chris Cuomo would acknowledge the event and apologize in a statement.
