Being offered $35 million for a day’s work would be hard to pass up for most people—unless your name is George Clooney, of course.
“We Decided It’s Not Worth It,” says George Clooney
In an interview with The Guardian, Clooney mentioned the massive offer and that he turned it down after floating it to his wife Amal Clooney. Ultimately, the two felt that it was a pass.
The commercial was for an airline—which isn’t anything new or interesting until Clooney went more into the reason. It appears that the airline is in “a country that, although it’s an ally, is questionable at times.”
George Clooney Turned Down $35 MILLION for a ONE DAY Airline Commercial
George Clooney added that if working with an entity that has ties to a sometimes-questionable country will keep him up at night “it’s not worth it”.
He didn’t go into the name of the airline or the country but knowing Clooney’s history of human rights activism–something he shares with wife Amal—it’s a sizable list of “which airline is it, which country is it”.
That said, turning down the one-day commercial deal isn’t hurting George Clooney at all. A few years ago, he sold off Casamigos, his tequila for a hefty $1 billion and the Clooneys have the pockets to keep a satellite in space at $5 million a year to keep an eye on human rights violations.
In The Guardian interview, he even mentioned that he’s at a position in his career where he doesn’t have to take on film roles as often and take on roles that he’s interested in.
At 60 and a career spanning over 40 years, Clooney is at a stage where he doesn’t have to worry about being relevant since he’s still in demand. Just look at an airline with hefty pockets offering $35 million for a commercial.
