Details surrounding the shooting death of Halyna Hutchins and the injury of Joel Souza on the set of “Rust” keep getting murkier and murkier. Now, film star Alec Baldwin says that he never pulled the trigger on the prop firearm.
Alec Baldwin Denies Pulling the Trigger
In an interview with ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, he stated “The trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger.” Baldwin also added, “I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger, never.”
Currently, the investigation is ongoing as the Sante Fe County Sheriff’s Department has come out and discussed progress and findings on the case several times.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza noted that their findings so far determined that “there was some complacency on this set” and that there “are some safety issues that need to be addressed by the film industry and possibly by the state of New Mexico”.
Chances of Legal Action
During the Stephanopoulos interview, Alec Baldwin said that he didn’t know how a real bullet got on the set. He also said that he didn’t believe he would be charged with the shooting, calling the notion “highly unlikely”.
Legal experts have said that the interview isn’t doing Baldwin any favors. As it happens, sit-down interviews surrounding controversy or murder tend to backfire in some way the majority of the time from a PR stance.
Regardless of what Alec Baldwin thinks of his chances of being charged, First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said this in response to Baldwin’s statements:
“Everyone involved in the handling and use of firearms on the set had a duty to behave in a manner such that the safety of others was protected, and it appears that certain actions and inactions contributed to this outcome. Once I have had the opportunity to review the complete investigation, certain individuals may be criminally culpable for his/her actions and/or inactions on the set of ‘Rust.’”
