In an upcoming tell-all, a close friend of the late Amy Winehouse claims that Prince offered to get the singer out of her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil.
Prince Tried to Get Amy Winehouse Away from Troubling Marriage Almost 4 Years Before Her Death Says Late Singer’s Best Friend
Amy Winehouse was invited as a guest performer on the last night of Prince’s 2007 The Earth Tour: 21 Nights in London residency at the 02 Arena. The two would perform a duet of Winehouse’s “Love is a Losing Game.”
Author Tyler James—a friend of Winehouse—mentions that Prince’s videographer, Phil Griffin set up the meeting between the two stars. After a well-received performance, everyone returned to Prince’s dressing room.
While in the back, Winehouse said that Blake was joining them and James knew what that meant. In the upcoming book, My Amy: The Life We Shared, James said:
“And now with Blake there, the whole atmosphere changed. Blake was paranoid, itchy, going into Prince’s toilet to do drugs. Everything switched to edgy. There was cash in the dressing room, just lying there, out in the open on the makeup table. No one was paying attention to it.”
He would that while riding from the venue, Fielder-Civil joked about stealing “hundreds of pounds” from the Purple Rain legend. Tyler James said that he “was mortified” by Blake’s actions:
“Amy brushed it off. I knew she knew it was wrong, but in front of him, she laughed about it, because she felt awkward…It turned out Blake stole some of Prince’s hairbrushes, too.”
Apparently, he would get a call from the videographer—Phil Griffin—who had been accused of stealing the money after security noticed it was missing. Since Griffin didn’t have his pass which identified him as the Visual Director, security beat Griffin up and tossed him out.
Amy Winehouse contacted Prince the next day and apologized for the theft and said she’d return the cash. Prince said that the money wasn’t important and that “It’s just really not cool what happened with Phil.”
The Artist would call Winehouse several times afterward to see “if there was anything he could do to get her away from Blake.” He would also offer to send a plane to get her away from him.
The “Rehab” singer would divorce Blake Fielder-Civic in the summer of 2009. During their time together, she would develop an addiction to crack and heroin. Tyler wrote that in her final years, she had gotten off drugs but had turned to alcohol heavily. The bottle would take the young singer’s life at 27-years-old on July 23, 2011.
Prince would die as a result of an accidental fentanyl overdose at the age of 57 on April 21, 2016.
