When CM Punk & Jon Moxley were set to meet to decide who the Undisputed AEW World Champion is – no one expected the match to end in just three minutes. However, Jon Moxley did just that – and CM Punk has no excuse. His broken foot was 100% – so maybe his new 100% simply isn’t good enough. However, his trainer and coach Ace Steel would remind Punk just who he is – and fired him up.
Now, we have CM Punk with more fire in him than ever before in AEW, as he looks to reclaim the AEW World Championship, and finally have the title reign AEW fans were hoping to see from Punk. To get that, he just needs to defeat Jon Moxley – a man who is in the prime of his career, and on the best run of his life. It might take more than a hot Chicago crowd to get Punk back on top here tonight.
Jon Moxley Enters Hostile Territory
Jon Moxley enters tonight with a 57-4-1 singles record in AEW, while Punk has an overall 20-2 record. One of those losses was to Moxley, and the other was to MJF. Despite being in Chicago in a pro-CM Punk crowd, Moxley marched on through – and had some supporters in the arena, just not very many.
Punk would be driven into the corner, and would be able to turn things around and hit some chops. Moxley would get some forearm strikes in,before taking the roundhouse kick. Two rising knees and a short arm lariat was followed by the Hammer & Anvil elbows. Punk called for and hit the Go To Sleep – but this one was far from over, Moxley kicking out.
This one would turn into a brawl out into the crowd, with Punk keeping control. Fans would get more behind Moxley as he was on the defensive – and shoved CM Punk right into the ring post. Punk was bleeding, and Moxley smelled the blood in the water, punching Punk in the wound and tasting the blood left on his hand.
Punk would be slammed face first off the steps, blood flicking onto one of the cameras. Moxley would call Punk back into the ring, and focused in on that wound with more punches. Punk was throwing weak strikes, and would stumble when kicked in the leg.
CM Punk Shows Guts To Earn Second AEW World Championship
Moxley would go after the previously injured foot of Punk, trying to force a submission in the middle of the ring. An STF would be applied, before Moxley focused on the foot. Punk would get free by raking the eye of Moxley, before having his foot trapped in the ropes for the dropkick.
Dragon Screw Leg Whip would land, before Moxley applied the Figure Four Leg Lock in the middle of the ring. Punk would hang on, but Moxley would set up the piledriver on the apron. Moxley would be driven into the ringpost shoulder first by Punk, before the Anaconda Vice would be applied, but Moxley got free and stomped the head.
Punk would avoid the lariat, before Moxley would lock in the rear naked choke. He’d block into an armbar, before Moxley turned it into an ankle lock. Moxley followed with a German Suplex, before taking a roundhouse kick. Death Rider would land, and Punk was able to kick out. Bulldog Sleeper was applied, but Punk rolled out.
GTS would land, and Moxley would fall onto the shoulders of Punk after hitting the ropes. Second GTS would follow, and we have a new AEW World Champion.
MJF Returns
After the match, the lights would go out – and we’d get audio from Tony Khan talking to someone on the phone, saying that if they come back at All Out and join the Casino Ladder Match, they’d get the money they want without the extension. The masked man that won the ladder match is none other than MJF.
His familiar theme would hit, not only is he back – he’s the #1 contender for CM Punk’s AEW World Championship after winning that Casino Ladder Match. Punk would hold the title high, and MJF made his intentions crystal clear.
