We’re diving into a 2000’s wrestling relic in episode two of WOW Women of Wrestling. This show aired in October 2000 and featured the aftermath of Terri Gold being crowned the WOW Champion. It was your typical “the champion is a fighting champion with a target on their back” storyline. That’s mainly Terri Gold’s run in WOW.

    The Undercard

Well, all of the matches are damn brief with everything being below the six-minute mark. Lana Star ran a celebrity or cocky actress gimmick. In-ring, she was nothing to even think about writing home about but she was good at character work. The same could be said about her opponent Patti Pep minus the character work.

In Pep’s defense, her gimmick didn’t have much to work with at all. She was just a bubbly face and that’s a generic gimmick that is what it is. The gimmick works well for someone meant to get spanked by Lana Star. Thumbs down for the opener.

Also getting a thumbs down are two matches featuring my two WOW favorites. First, Riot spanking Beckie the Farmer was a match meant to put the antisocial generic punk Riot over. Of the talent with no wrestling background, Riot did her gimmick the best. She also benefited from a gimmick where she wrestled as expected.

A violent, weapons-using brawler, Riot was one of the best heels against a roster of mostly bubbly faces. With that said, this match was nothing special. Another favorite was Ice Cold who spanked heavier WOW star Boom Boom. Ice Cold’s gimmick had the most potential to be something bigger in the company.

Mind you, that’s mainly because there was a supernatural edge to her gimmick and she seems like someone that creative could work with. It just required that she have more time to really put her over. WOW Women of Wrestling tended to give everyone mic time instead of just those with a lot of potential or their draws.

Ice Cold could’ve been that woman even if her clamping Boom Boom doesn’t show it.

    The Main Event

Poison was another of WOW’s heels—who wiped all the faces on this episode, by the way—and didn’t have the most standout gimmick. It’s as if the thought for this gimmick is that “We need a poison-themed femme fatal and her name should be Poison.” That’s it. A lot of these gimmicks didn’t seem to have the most thought or long-term goals in mind.

A couple of the gimmicks smacked of there being plans down the line but that’s a handful of them. OG Randi Rah Rah is the same. I say “OG” since the gimmick was rebooted for the WOW reboot like the Disciplinarian gimmick. Like the original, the present one uses a cheerleader gimmick.

Unlike the current Randi, the original just got spanked all the time and the main event was more of the same. This was a weak main event but again, most of the roster is actresses, models, athletes, and stuntwomen with no wrestling experience. If they delivered a banger two episodes in, I’d be surprised.

WOW Women of Wrestling #2 Verdict: Bronze Medal (Thumbs Down for the Undercard and the Main Event)

Well, there’s nothing to say about this episode. You can tell it was part of a taping day since everything main focused on promos, recaps, and discussing everything but the matches during the bulk of the matches. Some time was dedicated to those wrestling but it would take time to actually flesh these gimmicks out.

The main pros for this episode are the pros for the series as a whole: it’s an hour long and the pacing of the matches is really good mainly because they’re short and basic. Those are the two strengths of this episode because even with four bad-to-acceptable matches is tolerable if it’s an hour TV program.

Yeah, you’re wasting time watching an hour of bad wrestling but it’s an hour of wrestling that you know isn’t going to be decent. You’re not going in with high expectations of season one WOW at all and you’re not sitting through more than one hour and waiting on the banger of the night.

This is 2000s GLOW with women in a bunch of occupational gimmicks and two veterans to keep the episodes tight.

    Match of the Show: None
