We know that Meghan Markle is a really ‘open’ person when it comes to sharing experiences and advices. As such, she is not holding back when on her extremely popular podcast, Archetypes, she reveals details from her private life.
First of all, on the debuting episode of her podcast, the Duchess of Sussex explained how she looks on the concept of ambition.
The Amazing Things That Meghan Markle Revealed On Her Hit Podcast Archetypes
“I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ‘ambitious’ until I started dating my now-husband, Prince Harry.” – Meghan Markle explained to her guest Serena Williams. “Apparently, ambition is a terrible, terrible thing — for a woman, that is.”
In the first episode of Archetypes, Meghan Markle also recalled an incident that while she and Prince Harry were in South Africa in 2019.
“The moment we landed, we had to drop him off at this housing unit that they had had us staying in.” – the Duchess of Sussex said, referring to her then 4 month old son, Archie. “He was going to get ready to go down for his nap.”
After she and Prince Harry dropped Archie and left him to sleep with his babysitter they immediately left to attend a royal engagement. However, even though Meghan Markle reveals they had a good time there, when they received the news that there has been a fire in the residence where they left their son, they got scared and rushed back.
“We finish the engagement, we get in the car and they say there’s been a fire at the residence.” – Meghan explained her distressing experience. “There’s been a fire in the baby’s room. I was like, ‘Can you just tell people what happened?’ “As a mother, you go, ‘Oh, my God, what?’ Everyone’s in tears, everyone’s shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement? I said, ‘This doesn’t make any sense.’”
In the second episode of Meghan Markle’s podcast, she hosted the pop diva, Mariah Carey. As the Duchess of Sussex would later in the episode say – Mariah is one of her childhood heroes. The singer especially impressed young Meghan, as she has one white and one black parent, same as her. The fact that she managed to become popular despite all the stereotypes and discrimination amazes her.
“You were so formative for me. When you came onto the scene, I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. Someone … someone kind of looks like me.’” – Meghan Markle spoke about their common thing.
“I remember going, ‘I need to get jean shorts. Oh, I need to get jean shorts,.” – Meghan flattered the singer, explaining about the time she saw the ‘Dreamlover’ music video. “I need to have that little checkered, tied-up shirt.”
On the podcast, Meghan Markle is trying to open herself to her public. With it she has a goal of encouraging women all over the world to believe in themselves. She reveals that she, now as a famous person once struggled with complexes about her looks as well. In her teens, the Duchess of Sussex had “massive, frizzy, curly hair and a huge gap in my teeth.”
She explained how she felt like she is the ‘ugly duckling’, she couldn’t fit in anywhere.
“I was the smart one. Forever and ever and ever and ever. And then [I] just sort of grew up.” – Meghan said. “But I never had anyone to sit with at lunch. I was always a little bit of a loner and really shy and didn’t know where I fit in. And so I just … was like, ‘OK, well then I’ll become the president of the multicultural club. The president of sophomore class and the president of this and join French club.’ And by doing that, I had meetings at lunchtime. So I didn’t have to worry about who I would sit with. Or what I would do because I was always so busy.”
One of the most interesting things that Meghan Markle told on her podcast is how dating Prince Harry changed her life for her. She doesn’t refer to the obvious change in life. She refers on how people started treating her, how they saw her for what she truly is – a black woman.
“I think for us, it’s very different because we’re light-skinned.” – she told the mixed race Mariah Carey. “You’re not treated as a Black woman. People don’t treat you as a white woman. You sort of fit in between. If there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband. Then I understood what it is like people to treat you like a Black woman. Because up until then, they treated me like a mixed woman. And things really shifted.”
Dating Prince Harry has changed her life completely. However, she reflected on that how the Prince once helped her with her emotional struggles. According to the Duchess, her mental health was at its ‘worst’ at one point. If it wasn’t for her husband she would have been completely lost.
“I mean, I think at my worst point, being finally connected to someone that helped.” – she recalled. She revealed that Prince Harry referred her to a psychiatrist that helped her better herself massively. “The psychiatrist didn’t know I was even calling her. She was checking out at the grocery store. … I was saying I need help and she could hear the dire state that I was in. But I think it’s important for all of us to be really honest about what it is that we need. Not be afraid to make peace with that, to ask for it.”
