The 33-year-old rose to stardom in the early 2000s before the #MeToo movement brought forth the abusive practices that were rampant in Hollywood.
Tarana Burke initially began the MeToo movement in 2006, creating the phrase, however in 2017 it began to be recognised globally when Alyssa Milano encouraged survivors of sexual mistreatment to share their experiences on social media.
Mia, who chose to remain tight-lipped, asserted that many young actresses have suffered abuse in Hollywood. With that being said, Mia made it known that she had been through difficult periods in the industry.
In her comments, she said: “I was young, I didn’t know how to protect myself. I think you would be hard-pressed to find any young woman who hasn’t experienced a level of abuse or inappropriate experiences or behaviour towards them. But it’s not really something that I discuss.”
Mia abandoned her career in Hollywood in the past few years and moved back to her hometown, Sydney, to focus on projects there. In 2019, Mia shared with The Guardian her experiences as a famous actress, and she revealed that it was not all that it seemed.
When asked what counsel she would provide to aspiring actors, Mia answered: “If you really, really love it – keep going but my perspective has changed.
“I’ve done this job for ten years now all over the world and after a while, it leaves you feeling hollow.” The fans on social media made their position very clear.
A certain subset of people felt that there should have been more protection offered from those close to Mia to ensure that she was fine.
One person wrote: “How do parents allow their kids to go to Hollywood and have predators take advantage of them?
“Where were her parents to protect her when she was young and starting out? Were they seduced by the money? There is no excuse.”
