According to the police, the was an investigation into Aviles and she was being tracked for some days as she was known to be involved burglaries in the area. On top of that, she has a history of arrests with the city.
Authorities moved in for the arrest just as De Niro—stirred awake by Aviles’ disturbance—was heading downstairs to the living room when the cuffs were put on her. When they confronted her, she was trying to steal property belonging to the Godfather actor.
Shanice Aviles was charged with second-degree burglary and is being held on $40,000 cash bail. Aviles has criminal record with over 25 arrests for burglary.
The amount was chosen as an exasperated Manhattan DA Dylan Los Huertos explained to the judge that they tried everything with Aviles that could allow for her to turn her life around saying:
“There is no least restrictive means other than monetary bail. We have tried everything else, therefore significant cash bail is appropriate here.”
To Los Huertos’ point, Shanice Aviles had just been released and her $5,000 bail was waived in exchange for her entering rehab—on December 13–less than a week before this burglary attempt.
In just 2022, she has been arrested 16 times.
