While All Elite Wrestling didn’t have a major presence at WrestleMania Weekend – Ring of Honor brought some of their stars to LA. Supercard of Honor 2023 was their first major PPV event of the year – featuring one of the most stacked cards of the entire weekend.
All ROH titles were on the line, and the AAA Mega Championship also found its way onto the show after El Hijo del Vikingo recently was introduced to fans with his match against Kenny Omega. The full results are here – with the following going down on last nights show.
Brian Cage Remains ROH Six Man Tag Team Champion
Opening match of the night saw Vikingo defend the AAA Mega Championship against Komander – which was simply a jaw dropping showcase of lucha libre.
These are two of the best to come from Mexico over the past few years, and they arguably stole the show with this encounter. Vikingo was able to come out still champion after a closely fought match, but no one would turn down a rematch.
The Embassy would defend the ROH World Six Man Tag Team Championships against the trio of AR Fox, Blake Christian & Gran Metalik in a quick match – with The Embassy retaining their championships.
Brian Cage got the deciding fall, and with his recent contract negotiations- this shows that he’s sticking with Tony Khan, and not joining the WWE roster.
One of the harder hitting matches of the night would see Athena defend the ROH Women’s World Championship against TJPW star Yuka Sakazaki.
It was a simple hard hitting match from two of the best, with Athena able to hit a Springboard O-Face to retain her Championship. She will defend against TJPW ace Miyu Yamashita this Thursday on ROH on HonorClub – another major match.
Lucha Bros Win Reach For The Sky Ladder Match
The most emotional match of the night came as Mark Briscoe tried to win the ROH World Television Championship in honor of his late brother, Jay Briscoe.
Unfortunately for him, Samoa Joe does not care about sentimental moments – and despite the best efforts of Briscoe, Joe would choke him out and keep his reign intact. There was respect shown after the bell, as it’s never personal with Joe – it’s all business.
Daniel Garcia would find himself in another big time match, as he went one on one with the Once in a Century Talent, Hiroshi Tanahashi.
Tanahashi was fresh off a hard fought match against Mike Bailey, yet still rose to the occasion and showed Garcia just how far he has to go as a professional wrestler. Garcia was able to hold his ground, but when hit with the High Fly Flow – he was not kicking out.
New ROH World Tag Team Champions would be crowned in the Reach For The Sky Ladder match, putting The Lucha Bros, Top Flight, The Kingdom, Aussie Open & La Faccion Ingobernable in a five way match. It was complete chaos from bell to bell, just as Jay Briscoe would have wanted to be remembered.
Dante Martin would suffer a broken leg during the match, taking a Canadian Destroyer off a ladder through some tables, and landing wrong. Lucha Bros would leave as the new champions – adding more belts to their legacy.
Katsuyori Shibata Wins ROH Pure Rules Championship, Eddie Kingston Falls Short In Main Event
Wheeler Yuta had called out NJPW Legend Katsuyori Shibata for a Pure Rules Championship match, and Shibata accepted the challenge.
Yuta was completely outmatched by The Wrestler, surviving 13 minutes of brutal action with Shibata before being dropped with a PK – marking Shibata’s first ROH Championship victory.
The main event saw Claudio Castagnoli defend the ROH World Championship against Eddie Kingston – with their issues dating back to 2006.
It was a back and forth war from two of the best in the world, with bitterness thrown into each strike and suplex. Kingston was within reach of his first World Championship, but some slick wrestling from Castagnoli allowed him to sneak the three count – though this will not be their last meeting over this belt.
Will Kingston call for a Fight Without Honor against Castagnoli for Death Before Dishonor? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
