After carrying the Smackdown Women’s division through 2020, many viewed Bayley not being on the card for Wrestlemania 37 as a major show of disrespect. However, tonight at Backlash she gets a chance to regain her Smackdown Women’s championship as she takes on Bianca Belair. Belair won the belt in the main event of Wrestlemania 37 – Night One by beating Sasha Banks, but now she has to prove that wasn’t a fluke.
Bayley Will Do Anything To Win
They’d exchange rear waist locks in the middle of the ring, before Belair sent Bayley to the outside. Bayley got back in, only to end up in an armbar in the middle of the ring. She’d go after the braid of Belair, and almost get whipped for it. Belair would be caught with a pinfall for two, before taking Bayley down with a dropkick.
Throwing Bayley into the corner, Belair took some time to gloat, which allowed Bayley to counter the next toss, only to be hip tossed over the ropes. She’d dodge the handspring moonsault on the first go, but Belair got her on the second go. Bayley got back into the match by yanking at the earring of Belair, showing she’d do anything to get her title back.
Belair would be choked on the ropes, with Bayley using all of the five count. She’d slow the pace down, and nail a back suplex for a two count on Belair. Bayley went up top for the elbow drop, but was actually suckering Belair in for a stun-gun on the apron. Belair would counter and take Bayley in with a suplex.
Bayley got a flash roll up for a two count, before rolling to the outside and hitting an inverted suplex onto the steel steps. Belair would then find herself suplexed onto the floor, and shoved into the ring where she was able to kick out at two. Bayley was caught as she went for a crossbody, but was able to fight free and hit a side slam for a two count.
Bianca Belair Warned Her Not To Touch Her Hair
Belair tossed Bayley out of the ring as she kicked out of a pinfall, and this just annoyed Bayley. This one was turning into a fight as Bayley called Belair a rookie. Belair threw Bayley around the hit a dropkick, before Bayley hit a chop block and looked for the Rose Plant. This was blocked, and Belair nailed a spinebuster for a two count.
Bayley fought back with a lariat and the flying elbow, but Belair kicked out at two. They’d head to the outside, and Bayley sent Belair face first into the ring post. Bayley went for a dive to the outside, and Belair dodged. A glam slam onto the apron got a two count in the ring, before Bayley got a roll up with the ropes for leverage.
She got caught, before raking the eyes of Belair just out of sight of the referee. Bayley grabbed the braid of Belair, and used it to set up the Bayley to Belly, getting a two count. Belair was able to counter another Rose Plant, and get the win with a roll up using her braid to wrap up the legs of Bayley.
The chemistry wasn’t nearly as good as that of Belair & Banks, but Bayley showed why she’s known as a ring general in this match. A rough finish aside, this was a fine match between two of Smackdown’s finest. This won’t be the last match of these two, nor the best. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
